Saturday morning lazy brunch
We headed to Frank's Bar in Norwich for a late breakfast- poached eggs on granary toast, with bacon and slow roasted tomatoes- yum!
Breakfast tea on the side π
After running some errands in town and at home, we met up with friends Em and Craig for dinner that evening.
We ended up at The Wine Cellar in the centre of Norwich, but hidden away down an alley and in the basement (cellar) of a building. It was much larger than I was expecting, and surprisingly really empty for a Saturday night so we managed to get a table with no problems.
We had to wait quite a while for our food and the service was a bit lacking - the waiter forgot to bring us the drinks/wine list (in a wine bar?!), as well as not providing any salt and pepper for the table or letting us know what the specials or soup of the day was.
However, despite the lack of atmosphere and poor service the food was amazing! I went with the Gressingham Duck:
Duo of local Gressingham duck, pan fried duck breast, confit
of duck rillette served with rissole potatoes, poached
rhubarb, carrot puree and a redcurrant sauce - Β£14.95
It was really well cooked, and very tasty. I wasn't completely sure about the rhubarb but it added an interesting sweetness and acidity to the dish and overall was very enjoyable.
We shared a bottle of the Fairhall Cliffs Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc:
Very zesty on the palate with lots of lime and a nettly herbaceousness, this is an aromatic and classic New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc with a refreshing dry finish.
Very drinkable! And only Β£15 for the bottle, which isn't bad for a restaurant. The food was reasonably priced too- the boys had soup to start (sweet potato and pumpkin, yum!) and the total bill was in the region of Β£80 so an affordable Saturday night out. Despite the service, I think I would return to the Wine Cellar, the food and wine definitely made up for it!
