Next month sees the start of the teapigs "Matcha May" campaign where they will be basically talking all things matcha and shouting from the roof tops how awesome it is. They sent me a little mini sample pouch to review to kick things off...
What is Matcha?
The "superhero" amongst teas! Matcha is made from 100% natural green tea leaves, ground down to form a powder. It comes from the Nisho region in Japan, and has been drunk by Buddhist monks for almost 900 years, as well as now becoming popular among students studying for exams!
What are the benefits?
- Matcha is essentially a very concentrated from of green tea, containing 137 times the antioxidants found in regular green tea!
- It also contains two special amino acids, which when combined with the naturally occurring caffeine, work to give you an energy boost that will improve learning performance, promote concentration and support the immune system.
- The polyphenols in green tea can help to prevent UV-induced skin damage, and a study suggested drinking 10+ cups a day (perhaps a little excessive!) may protect against cardiovascular and liver disease.
- Finally green tea has been shown to increase thermogeneis in the body, thus assisting with burning more calories and possibly helping with weight loss.
Definitely a lot of high expectations for a little green powder!
What did I think?
Unfortunately because the sample didn't arrive before my training course, I've only really had a chance to try it quickly in the last day or so...
I've had some in the morning for 2 days, as a hot green tea and whisked into some apple juice.
The flavour is quite fresh, like cut grass, but when mixed with other foods isn't particularly noticeable. The powder didn't dissolve as much as I expected with some lumps still visible at the bottom of the glass- maybe I needed to mix it more!
There are a lot of other recipe ideas here- matcha cookies look awesome!
I haven't seen any particular effects so far, but I feel that it's probably too early to say. I am generally reasonably awake in the mornings, and have felt quite "full of beans" but that could be attributed to many other causes (namely two weeks off work, the appearance of sunshine, and yesterday, running around London with a great bunch of people!) so I should perhaps try taking it in the afternoon to combat the 4o'clock slump I usually suffer from!
I will continue to use up my matcha sample and report back if I notice any changes! I will definitely consider buying some more but it is quite expensive, although as you only use a tiny amount at a time a container would last a while. You can currently also buy a 2g sample packet for Β£2.00 so you can try before you commit!
