I live in Bedfordshire with my family, but love exploring our local area and further afield in the UK. Find out more about our adventures on my Outdoor Life page.
This is a blog about my fitness journey - getting sweaty, muddy and living life to the full! I am not a qualified Personal Trainer or Dietician - if you are about to start running, or working out generally and youโre new to fitness or have any health concerns, itโs always best to get checked out by your doctor.
When a person with asthma comes into contact with something that irritates their airways (an asthma trigger), the muscles around the walls of the airways tighten so that the airways become narrower and the lining of the airways becomes inflamed and starts to swell. Sometimes, sticky mucus or phlegm builds up, which can further narrow the airways.
These reactions cause the airways to become narrower and irritated - making it difficult to breathe and leading to symptoms of asthma such as shortness of breath, tightness in the chest, coughing or wheezing and decreased sporting performance. For more information visit Asthma & Lung UK.
My son is now nearly two but I am no motherhood expert! As you would expect, I'm a big advocate for getting outside and getting active after having a baby. A stroll around the local streets with Arthur in the pram or the baby carrier helped to ease the tiredness in those first few months, helped massively with my headspace and mental well-being and made me feel a little like my pre-baby self - plus the motion of walking helped him to fall asleep which was a winner!
There are several other things that I found helped in that initial newborn phase, but the top two had to be babywearing - great for helping you get things done around the house or get out of the house for some fresh air, and breastfeeding/contact napping/cosleeping - great for helping you get some rest too. Both are super important for building a strong bond between mum and baby and supporting that initial newborn brain development too. (Disclaimer: this is just what worked for me.)
Having completed my first post-baby 5k, I'm now looking to build some consistency to my fitness routine which is definitely a challenge with a super energetic toddler! I'm signed up to Run Up to Christmas 2024, and am hoping to become more of a regular at our local parkun. As for 2025, who knows...
