24 Hours in the Life of a Fitness PR

I changed jobs about 2months ago, from a Geophysicist in the Oil & Gas industry to a Junior Account Executive in a Fitness PR agency – to be honest, I’m still adjusting! Here I share a “Day in the Life” post as part of the London Bloggers August Link-Up.Β

MORNING

My alarm goes off at 6am. I hit snooze.
My radio also comes on playing Absolute Radio and I lie and listen to the music for 5-10minutes, before the snoozed alarm jolts me awake again. I down the glass of water on my bedside and drag myself out of bed.
I turn on all the lights, fling open the curtains in an effort to wake up.
After a quick shower I put on my yoga kit, make a cup of tea in my travel mug, grab breakfast and lunch I prepared the night before, and an energy bar to eat and head out the door at 6:45am.

I drink my tea on the way to Moorgate, arriving at the Light Centre for an 8am Vinyasa Yoga class. I sweat and stretch my way through the class – it’s a tough one as it’s only 45minutes so pretty fast paced. It’s simple moves though, a lot of sun salutations, some warrior poses, and finishing with a short but sweet savasana.

Some mornings I’ll meet a friend for a quick breakfast and catch-up at Le Pain Quotidien – it’s a lovely way to start the day and always puts me in a good mood.

When I get to work I’ll eat breakfast – usually fruit, yoghurt and granola – while checking emails.

I’ve only been in my current job for a short while, and every day has been so varied! I usually get started on clipping the coverage we’ve received for clients. Then throughout the morning I write press releases and follow up on ones I’ve sold in previously to local newspapers, trade titles and consumer magazines.

I also send out samples/product to magazines, journalists and bloggers, and keep the stock we have in the office organised.

It’s been really interesting being on the other side of the equation with blogging relations – I’m trying to use my experience as a blogger to create successful campaigns, but stress the fact that bloggers time needs to be respected and they deserve to be taken seriously.

LUNCH

The ladies that I work with are lovely and there’s usually a lot of chat going on, even though there’s mostly just 3 of us in the office! Sometimes I’ll pop out to a class at FRAME at lunchtime but to be honest, it’s a little tricky with such a small team so I tend to fit in my workouts before or after work.

I do try and get away from my desk though, even if it’s just for a walk. I like wandering around the streets and discovering new places as I don’t know the area of London that well yet.
I normally bring in my own lunch to save money even though there are a host of cool cafes in Shoreditch! I like to have variety in what I eat which requires forward planning so I try to get organised on a Sunday afternoon but that doesn’t always happen.

AFTERNOON

Afternoon’s are pretty varied, involving research for new projects, more writing, and making lots of phone calls. I also headed out of the office recently for a photoshoot for the new company website- running around Shoreditch and through Hoxton Square was pretty fun!

The afternoon always involves plenty of cups of tea as well!

EVENING

I finish work at 6pm. Some evenings I’ll head to a class at BOOM Cycle or 1Rebel – I love Spinning, and the music and setup at BOOM and 1Rebel is pretty awesome. Occasionally I’ll meet a friend for dinner. The pop-up on Old Street roundabout is great for a cocktail and a burger in the summer sunshine!

After work/dinner/Spinning I’ll jump on a train home- my commute is about an hour. Dinner is usually something quick – perhaps leftovers from the freezer reheated in the microwave, or a salad.

I have a problematic sweet tooth and like to enjoy a little treat in the evening’s while I watch Netflix (The Good Wife at the moment) and relax! Not every night I must stress, but banana cake or a quick mug cake, or a slice of shortbread with my late night cup of tea is a little guilty pleasure…

I try and get to bed early-ish (around 10:30pm), in order to get up and do it all again the next day!

Good Night!

What does your typical day look like?

  1. Sounds like a perfect day to me- 2 workout sessions, lunch in the park, and you get to work with all the lovelies at ActionPR. So happy that you are enjoying your new career path. x

  2. LOVE this πŸ™‚ congrats again on the new job! I've always wondered what a day is like for someone who works in PR! …reading your post reminds of how important it is to be organised! I'm kinda good with planning meals, well, it goes from one extreme to the other! I also wish I was an early bird and could get my workouts in before work, but I'm not and I start at 830am. I was just looking on the 1Rebel site actually as I'm not too far away and could make it for the 30 minute lunch time class! Well, thanks for getting me thinking! and for linking up to the #LBLinkParty πŸ™‚ xoxo

  3. I'm also an Absolute Radio girl! I can barely listen to Radio 1 now haha. I love that you're there at Action, they're such a lovely team. I wish I had more time to be more organised with my blog and do reviews quicker, I think it's something that lets me down in my relationships with brands/PRs but there are just not enough hours in the day are there! Love the colouring book too, I've got a few of these at home… but like with everything else there's just not enough time! Looking forward to seeing the photos on the new website πŸ™‚ x

  4. Sounds like a very cosmopolitan day! I wish we had as many food options around…well actually my bank account wouldn't! My day's tend to me very samey but my weekend's tend to be varied. My commute is an hour as well but I drive which can be annoying!

  5. Ooo, your new job sounds really great! I'm loving the look of your lunches as well. I wish I was that organised in the mornings, but I leave for work at 6:30am. I start off with good intentions at the beginning of each term, but they never last for more than a month before I have to kick-start myself again. 😦

  6. Love reading these posts πŸ™‚ Is your company the same as action challenge? I'm going as a Dr on one of their expeditions in October if so! I think my blogger/ PR relations let me down too, it can just be so hard when blogging isn't actually your job to fit it all in!

  7. Your day sounds like it is from a movie or something! How lovely to be able to workout during the day.I sometimes download the COC podcast to listen to on my drive to work as that skips the songs – I hate getting a song stuck in my head!

  8. Thanks Imii! I actually got into it from a rather random background, as I studied Marine Geosciences at Uni and worked in the oil and gas industry for 5 years. However, I've been writing my blog for a few years, and just decided to apply for things and see what happened – I was really lucky that my current company liked me, and were willing to take me on board! Good luck πŸ™‚

  9. Yay to Absolute Radio :)And thanks George- am really enjoying the new job. It's definitely hard balancing the blog with the longer hours though. I'm loving the colouring trend, it's a nice way to feel like a kid again and do something a bit mindless πŸ™‚

  10. That's an early morning Mary! I hope the new term gets off to a good start – I know how hard it is to stay organised, I always have good intentions but life throws crazy distractions at you πŸ™‚ Thanks for commenting!

  11. Haha thanks Maria! Maybe not quite a movie, but it's definitely fun to look to put it in a post like this and see how my day varies and how much I manage to fit in πŸ™‚
